Folkestone Invicta U18s 3 Dartford Juniors 1

Having scored a last minute winner against Bridon Ropes last Sunday, the lads scored two late goals to clinch a place in the Third Round of the KitToFit League Cup with a 3-1 victory over Dartford Juniors. Although on this occasion we just about deserved to win against a battling Dartford side, who although defending for long spells of the game looked dangerous on the break and created a few chances themselves.

Invicta made the early running and George Edgell, Tyler Sterling and Brandon Collins all saw shots well saved by the impressive Dartford goalkeeper Adam Mills, who dealt with everything with the minimum of fuss. Dartford then had a chance when Nathan Holt raced onto a through ball and headed the ball over the advancing Invicta goalkeeper, Ollie Mitchell, but his touch took him a shade wide and the defence got back to cover before he could turn the ball into the net.

The game continued in the same vein, and on the half-hour mark, MacDonald Mide-Madoriola pounced on hesitation to nip in between the goalkeeper and defender to give ‘The Darts’ a 1-0 lead, which was slightly against the run of play. The goal however inspired our opponents and Lewis McDonnell saw his shot well saved by Mitchell. Invicta had the last and probably best chance of the first half when following a well taken corner from Jacob Emery, Joss Wickham sent a powerful header goal-wards, but Edghill headed over from under the bar.

We needed to get a early goal after the break, and with a subtle formation change that saw Shawn Ikwuagua come on in the middle of the defence and centre back Wickham move into midfield, we got just that. Despite Dartford having the kick-off, we won the ball and it was slipped through to Edghill who finished well from the edge of the area just thirty seconds into the restart. We then took hold of the game and pressed the Dartford defence but a combination of poor finishing and good goalkeeping by Mills kept the score level and after one brave save, diving at the feet of Edghill, he required quite lengthy treatment. As with the first half, Invicta looked the more likely to score, but again Dartford looked dangerous on the break and twice Mitchell had to be off his line swiftly to collect a through ball, firstly to deny Mide-Madoriola and then Harrison Teale.

Just as it looked like the game was heading for extra time, we got a free-kick which was deflected for a corner, from which Ikwuagua rose unchallenged to head home powerfully to give the home side the advantage with just two minute left on the clock. To their credit Dartford went looking for an equaliser and Mitchell saved well from Lewis McDonnell, although their frustration showed when Holt was cautioned for preventing the goalkeeper from clearing the ball. Then came the icing on the cake, as Edghill was fouled on the edge of the area and from the resultant free kick Hector Dupree saw his shot deflected past Mills to wrap up a 3-1 victory. The final act in the game saw Jack Crowson sent to the sin-bin for dissent which was a shame as it was a well competed match with both sides deserving credit for their effort, which was well appreciated by those watching from the sidelines and we wish Dartford good luck for the rest of the season.
