Folkestone Invicta U18s 3 Bridon Ropes U18s 2

Before Sunday’s game, there was a minute’s applause for Under 16 player Owen Kinghorn, who has tragically passed away. He had recently joined Folkestone Invicta from Kennington and was still to actually play for the club. The club’s condolances go out to Owen’s family and friends, both inside and outside the football community at this sad time.

The Youth Team were quite fortunate to pick up the three points on Sunday with Hector Dupree scoring an 88th minute winner. Bridon Ropes started the game on the front foot and Nathan Reid and Billy Smith both saw their shots blocked. Invicta then got into the game and Joss Wickham was unfortunate to see his header deflected clear following a well directed free kick from Tyler Sterling.

Invicta took the lead after 16 minutes when Brandon Collins ran onto a good through ball and slotted it past the Ropes’ goalkeeper Jack Wilson. As the game ebbed and flowed, both sides made chances and Amari Kpodo, who looked one of our opponents most dangerous players, crossed the ball and Adam Cooke was on hand to convert the chance. With there being no further goals the players went into the break level at 1-1.

Invicta came out the blocks quickly after the interval and within three minutes Joss Wickham had given us the lead, when he headed Jake Grant’s free kick against the post but then followed up to slam the ball home. We then made a couple of other good chances, which either went wide or were saved by Wilson. Despite this our opponents still looked dangerous on the break, and after such a break which resulted in a fine save by the Invicta goalkeeper Ollie Mitchell, William Telfer coolly went round two defenders before slotting the ball home. Telfer then looked as if he had been fouled in the penalty area but the Referee adjudged it as a fair tackle.

That appeared to be the end of the scoring but then, with two minutes, to go Dupree popped up with the winner to give Invicta the three points and maintain the 100% start to the season. This also put him top of the goalscorers list with 4 League goals so far this season.
